Community

In addition to being a volunteer board member for the Ramsey County Library System, John also serves on the Board of Directors for two community-based organizations:

Shoreview Area Youth Baseball

A significant source of community pride involves Shoreview Area Youth Baseball, which  serves hundreds of ballplayers aged 7 to 15 living within the Mounds View School District attendance area.  SAYB is a premiere youth baseball association in Minnesota, as its teams consistently place well in an array of statewide tournaments each season.  SAYB is also a significant ‘feeder’ league to both the Irondale and Mounds View High School baseball programs, as well as many fine private schools in the area– Cretin-Derham Hall, Hill-Murray, and Totino-Grace High Schools– to name a few.

In 2009, John started as the head coach of an Instructional League team, and has worked as part of a coaching staff every year since, 7 seasons in all.  Besides the coaching duties, he’s enjoyed serving as a team scribe (on the web) and organizing bonding activities– both team-specific and league-wide– during that time.  In 2013, John became SAYB’s Twins Night Coordinator, a position he continues to hold.  John joined the association’s Board of Directors in 2012, giving him 4 years of service in that role.SAYBBanneratTargetField

Northeast Youth & Family Services

By offering a suite of  ‘life supports’ to regional residents, Northeast Youth & Family Services has been a friend to families in the northeast metropolitan area since 1976– nearly 40 years.  A community-based non-profit agency, NYFS prepares youth & families for healthy lives– through counseling services, educational resources, and programs specifically designed to assist youth and seniors.

The NYFS building is also home to Reach Academy, which offers special education services to approximately 75 students in grades 6-12 who attend Mounds View Public Schools and several surrounding districts.

Each May, Shoreview-based NYFS hosts a Leadership Luncheon at Midland Hills Country Club in Roseville, where hundreds of business, educational, government & non-profit folks turn out to hear a speaker & socialize.  This past June, NYFS put on the first inaugural Mayors’ Golf Challenge, a tournament held at Keller Golf Course in Maplewood.

John just completed his “rookie year” as an volunteer board member for NYFS and looks forward to fulfilling the remaining two years of an initial, 3-year board term.
